Berkshire County Forecast – Monday, Nov. 28

The following forecast is provided by Jim Mays, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary:

The jet stream remains well to the north over Canada and we remain under the influence of warm, moist southwesterly flow from the clockwise circulation around a Bermuda High which is quite strong for this time of year. Therefore, temperatures will remain unseasonably warm, with near record high temperatures, for the next few days. A cut-off low over the southern Mississippi Valley will be picked up by a dip in the jet stream and move over the area with a bout of moderate to heavy rain Tuesday night. Temperatures will turn more seasonable after the storm passes on Wednesday.

Monday

Mostly cloudy and unseasonably warm.

High temperature in the low 60s.

Southwest winds at 5-10 mph.

Monday Night

Variable cloudiness and remaining mild.

Temperatures only falling to near 50 overnight.

Light southerly winds.

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy and unseasonably mild. There is a good chance that scattered showers will develop in the late afternoon. Probability of precipitation 50%. The showers will be mostly light with total rainfall generally under 0.10 inches.

High temperature near 60.

Light southeast winds increasing to 5-10 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night

A band of moderate to heavy rain will pass through the region overnight. The duration of rainfall will be approximately 4-6 hours and will likely occur sometime between 8 pm and 4 am. Probability of precipitation near 100%. Likely rainfall totals between 0.50 and 1.00 inches.

Temperatures holding steady in the 50s then falling into the upper 40s toward morning.

Southeasterly winds shifting to southwesterly toward morning at 8-15 mph.

Wednesday

Partly cloudy in the morning. Becoming mostly cloudy in the afternoon with the slight chance of a shower. Probability of precipitation 20%.

Temperatures in the upper 40s in the morning, falling through the 40s in the afternoon.

Southwest winds at 8-15 mph.

Berkshire County Forecast – Monday, Nov. 21

The following forecast is provided by Rebecca Argueta and Alan Robinette, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary: A colder high pressure system is building into the area behind a cold front the moved through overnight. This system will control our weather for the next 24-36 hours as it will be cool and sunny today and clear, calm and seasonably cold tonight. However, a low pressure system will approach from the Midwest tomorrow with increasing clouds during the day. Rain will develop Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday morning. Since the storm will move directly over the region, there will plenty of warm air available to make all of the precipitation in the liquid form. The rain could be heavy at times with rainfall amounts in excess of one inch in most areas. After the storm moves through, an expansive high pressure system will move slowly through the region and dominate the long holiday weekend with fair skies and temperatures warming into the 50s by Friday and possibly even into the 60s over the weekend.

Monday

Mostly sunny and cool.

High temperatures in the low 40s in the hilltowns and mid 40s for most areas but reaching the upper 40s in South County.

Northwest wind at 5-10 mph.

Monday Night

Clear, calm and cold.

Low temperatures in the mid 20s.

Calm winds.

Tuesday

Increasing high clouds in the morning, lowering and thickening during the afternoon.

High temperature in the low 40s.

Light south to southeasterly winds.

Tuesday Night

Rain developing before midnight and becoming heavy at times overnight. Probability of precipitation near 100%.

Temperatures dropping into the mid to upper 30s early but rising to near 40 by morning.

Easterly winds at 5-10 mph.

Wednesday

Rain tapering off over the course of the morning. It will remain cloudy with scattered snow or rain showers in the afternoon. Total rainfall from the storm likely will exceed one inch in most places. Probability of precipitation 80%.

Temperature holding steady near 40.

Winds shifting to northwest and increasing to 10-20 mph during the afternoon.

Extended Forecast

Here is a preliminary look at the holiday weekend…….

There will be scattered snow showers overnight on Wednesday with little if any accumulation. It will begin to clear on Thanksgiving day but remain breezy and cool with high temperatures in the 40s. The rest of the 4 day weekend looks precipitation free with mostly fair skies and temperatures warming into the 50s on Friday and possibly into the low 60s over the weekend.

Moisture carried by the wind from the Great Lakes will cause cloudy conditions with a chance of a lake effect snow or rain shower on Thursday but it will clear out and turn colder Thursday night and Friday as High pressure builds into the area.
