Stress Management Tip : Just Talk to Yourself

We all talk to ourselves. Everybody has a little voice in their head that seems to have an opinion about everything! Sometimes this voice can be quite negative and instigate us to make bad choice about our current situations, but it doesn’t have to be. Specifically during times of stress this little voice can make a mountain out of a mole hill, and only make matters worse. The trick to using this voice is to talk to yourself in the third person when you are stressed. By doing this you put yourself and that little voice on the same side rather fighting against each other! Two minds is always better than one. For example if you are passed over for a promotion ask yourself “Why is (your name) hurt?” while refraining from directly addressing yourself Why am I hurt?. Another example is if you fail a test, ask yourself “What can (your name) do better?” instead of “How can I do better?”. By giving yourself a little distance you become objective to your situation rather than personally involved. When you are thinking less about what you have done wrong or how you feel you can see the bigger picture, and will feel less stressed as you can see more options to help your situation.
