Public education’s dire straits

Derrick Z. Jackson is one of the treasures of the Boston Globe. In this piece, he brings to light several important points:

  • Mass’s touted high 4th grade reading scores are mostly due to the higher than national scores of Whites and Asians
  • Wealthy eastern MA communities are increasingly turning to parents for private support, but this is not a possibility for poorer communities
  • We are in danger of re-segregating education along ethnic/income lines
  • There is a need to a call for action for what is looking like a civil rights issue

Needless to say, the community colleges are the inheritors of these issues.
