"Aligning Course Design and Assessment" Brown Bag

On April 7, a small group viewed this video of a session from the League for Innovation 2007 conference. The presenters, Drs. Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt of Fielding University, began from a model of how retention of learning relates to teaching method:

Teaching methods vs. learning retention table

The presenters then discuss how to vary teaching methods and _ensure that the assessment matches the teaching method_. An example is that if you are having students doing reflection papers, group work with peer assessment, or multimedia-based presentations, it would not be a good fit to then have a final exam composed of only multiple choice questions. A segment of the presentation was dedicated to use of rubrics and sharing the rubrics with students, which they considered a best practice.
