DIRECTOR OF CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

The City of Pittsfield is offering an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual with vision and proven leadership ability to advance the agenda for cultural economic development for the Pittsfield community. The Director of Cultural Development will work with diverse arts and cultural organizations, as well as individual artists of all disciplines, to promote cultural endeavors through a variety of marketing channels, including: social media, earned media, radio, a comprehensive website, and a weekly e-mail newsletter. The Director will have oversight of the city-owned arts center that includes a gallery, artist studio, classroom, and performance space. In addition, other responsibilities include but are not limited to: organizes and produces City events such as 3rd Thursdays street festival series and the 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival, identify and secure funding for arts activities, partners in other special events and festivals throughout the year including the Downtown Pittsfield Farmers Market, and overall creates an atmosphere that attracts, welcomes and supports new and existing artists of all disciplines into Pittsfield. The Director reports to the Mayor and serves as the Mayor’s contact person to the schools and related community agencies on arts and cultural matters.

The desired candidate will possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts, journalism, marketing or related discipline required, graduate degree preferred.
  •  Minimum of five (5) years’ senior level experience in a cultural or economic development, arts administration, marketing and journalism, government management, or related field.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in public speaking.
  •  Experience in community and economic development, fundraising (including grant writing), marketing, budgeting, and project management.
  •  An awareness and understanding of the arts and it’s progression in the community is essential.
  •  Ability to periodically work nights and weekends, in accordance with special events.

Salary: $44,202 – $50,845
