Linked below is a short Pew survey ppt surveying teen (12-17 y.o.) use of writing in school work compared to its use in social networking and other online activities. It’s interesting that 60% of those surveyed don’t consider that time spent online socially as “writing.” Link: Teen Content Creators

When students “write” using “language” like “LOL” or “BFF” and abbreviating words so radically it is hard to understand their meaning, I’d agree with them that what they (some) do on social networking sites ISN’T writing…

I say *GRUMP**GRUMP*, especially, when I start to see mangled texting language in students’ emails to me and in their written work.
