Public Health Nurse

The City of Pittsfield’s Public Health Department is seeking an experienced Temporary Public Health Nurse. The Public Health Nurse is directly responsible for initiating/implementing a comprehensive public health nursing program to protect the health & well-being of the community’s environs through public health promotion, health assessment, prevention of the spread of communicable disease, health maintenance,public health education, emergency planning, in collaboration with local public health service agencies and the state; and supports the functions of the Health Department with evidence based public health strategies. Provide technical support to local community agencies and the Board of Health. Perform all public health responsibilities as mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public
Health and local regulations. The Public Health Nurse is required to keep abreast of new areas in public health that are continuously evolving and to provide departmental and community leadership for public health programs and services including emergency preparedness.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs Public Nursing functions that require the exercise of independent judgment as well as the interpretation and application of public
    health and emergency practices, laws and regulations to frequently changing conditions, threats and public health problems
  • Provide case management for patients with communicable diseases and their contacts including identification of those at risk,
    administration of testing, education and referral for evaluation
  • Maintain communicable disease surveillance system through follow-up of disease reports and investigations, recognize and report trends,
    enforcement of isolating and quarantine regulations and control of out breaks
  • Determine etiology of communicable diseases and other community diseases affecting the public health of the community
  • Assess community public health needs utilizing surveillance data sources and develop an annual community public health outreach plan;
    work collaboratively with traditional and non-traditional partners to achieve public health goals
  • Plan, implement and evaluate immunization clinics for the general public and Pittsfield municipal employees
  • Oversee the mandates tuberculosis program for the City of Pittsfield
  • Act in the capacity as a Public Health Nurse Educator
  • Assist department staff in related functions such as inspections of camp health records, food-borne outbreak investigations, etc.
  •   Responsible for planning, collaboration, and implementation of emergency preparedness for the City of Pittsfield
  • Provide education and supervision to contracted per diem and volunteer nurses
  • Ensure coverage of nursing services for daily MAVEN surveillance and response, DOT coverage (home visits) and flu clinics
  • All other related public health nursing duties and responsibilities normally associated with this position and/or as required or assigned by
    the Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited nursing school and a minimum of one year experience in Public Health Nursing with an emphasis
    on Community Public Health Nursing or a nursing degree with a minimum of five years Community Public Health Nursing
  • Supervisory experience and leadership skills in the nursing field
  • Thorough knowledge of the objectives, principles and techniques of public health nursing practice
  • CPR & First Aid certification
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City Department, state & community agencies,
    medical personnel and the general public
  •   Knowledge of applicable federal, state and public health laws regulations
  • Must be able to maintain accurate medical records, including but not limited to, communicable diseases, incidence and causes and
    control of communicable diseases and make basic interpretation of disease trends
  • Knowledge of innovative and evidence-based disease prevention and control strategies
  • Proficient in computer programs (word, excel, access) and their utilization in daily work activities and ability to navigate state data
    management system
  •   Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and vehicle

Temporary position with possibility of permanent status at a future date
Part-time, 28 hours per week
$31.98 – $36.18 Hourly
