Manager of Visitor Services

 The Edna St. Vincent Society is a nonprofit chartered under the New York State Department of Education. The Society’s mission: to illuminate the life and writings of Edna St. Vincent Millay and to preserve and interpret the character of Steepletop, her home and gardens, as places where nature inspires the creative spirit.

Reporting to the President of the Millay Society Board of Directors and working closely with the other Board Members and senior staff, the Manager of Visitor Services will be responsible for the planning and implementation as well as day-to-day management of Society’s Visitor’s Services at Steepletop. Services include an open season of small group tours of the gardens and the main house, plus special tours and events. Open season is late May through mid October. This manager would also oversee and be responsible for the Volunteers program, including managing the docents who conduct the tours.

The ideal candidate will have experience in managing volunteers or staff, day-to-day interaction with the public, strong organizational and time management skills, and solid computer skills. In addition, the successful candidate should demonstrate strong attention to detail, good judgment and the ability to build an engaged, motivated and vibrant volunteer program. Familiarity with Hudson Valley/Columbia County/Berkshire County strong plus.

The Manager should be a flexible, pro-active, creative leader with the experience and qualifications to perform the following functions:

* Manage the day-to-day functions of the Visitor Services program which opens Steepletop to the public each year, including seasonal visitor tours of the house and grounds, education activities, special events, as well as special groups tours conducted throughout the year.

Manage and direct the volunteer program, including the docent program; including recruitment, scheduling. training and recognition;

In collaboration with Director of Development and Literary Executor (or equivalent), develop and manage the on-site exhibitions included at the Visitor Center, and/or in the tours;

Manage and operate the Visitor Center gift shop; including inventory management, staffing, oversight of point of sale functions, etc;

Provide assistance to the staff, as needed;

Provide a monthly update to the Board by end of the first week of each month on all material and newsworthy activities.

We currently have an opening for an Assembly position within the Stationery Division located in North Adams  This is a second shift position (2:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.).

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to check accuracy of customer copy in accordance with computer work order
  • Follow all special instructions listed on the work order
  • Assure that all orders are packaged properly
  • Send completed orders to the Shipping Department
  • Scanning of all orders to proper location using the computer
  • Must be willing to tie Birth Announcements, Weddings programs, and Christmas cards
  • Must be able to line envelopes
  • Must be able to maintain productivity standards of current pay grade
  • Function well as a member of a department, lending support to other members, as well other departments as required

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be proficient in basic mathematics
  • Ability to read and write, keep neat and accurate records, and follow both written and verbal instruction
  • Positive interaction and communication with supervisors, customers, and peers.
  • Willingness and ability to expand knowledge and skills to develop the potential for advancement
