Berkshire County Forecast – Wednesday Dec. 7

The following forecast is provided by Patricia Jehle, in conjunction with theĀ  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary: Waves of low pressure continue to move through our area along a very slow moving cold front. This will result in a rainy day today and rain early tonight. As the final low pressure system intensifies off the coast tonight it will finally bring enough cold air into the region to turn the rain to snow around midnight. There will be a quick burst of heavy snow into the early morning hours, ending by 5 or 6am, that will accumulate in the range of 2-6 inches for most parts of Berkshire County. Once the snow ends it will become partly sunny, windy and colder on Thursday through Friday.

Wednesday

Rain, moderate to heavy at times through most of the day, tapering off a bit toward evening. Probability of precipitation 100%. Total rainfall between 0.50 and 0.75 inches.

High temperature steady in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Northwest winds at 5-10 mph.

Wednesday Night

Rain, heavy at times turning to snow around midnight. Snow will fall heavy at times after midnight, tapering off around 5 or 6 am. Rainfall amounts near 0.75 inches. Most areas will receive between 2 and 6 inches of snowfall accumulation with the greater amounts in the higher elevations to the north and west and the lesser amounts in the lower elevations to the south and east. Some “favored” areas in higher elevations in central and northern Berkshire may receive as much as 7 or 8 inches. Probability of precipitation 100%.

Temperatures falling through the 30s to the upper 20s by morning.

Northwest wind strengthening to 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 by morning.

Thursday

Partly sunny, windy and colder.

High temperatures near 30 in the hilltowns, low 30s in the lower elevations of central and northern Berkshire (e.g. Pittsfield and North Adams) and mid 30s in South County.

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy and cold.

Low temperature near 20.

Light to calm winds.

Mostly cloudy and slightly milder.

High temperature mid to upper 30s.

South-southwest wind at 5-10 mph.
