Course Description:
Intended to familiarize students with issues that characterize the
Seventeenth Century. This course will explore tensions between
science and religion, Old World and New World, and some of its
major figures. Rather than focus solely on Europe, our investigation
is global and extends to civilizations from Africa and Asia as well as
the New Worlds of North and South America. In addition to
readings, works of music and art that illuminate the themes of the
17th Century may also be studied. Prerequisite: ENG 101 and
twelve college-level credits completed with a grade-point average of
3.3, or permission of instructor. (This course is open to first semester
students.)
