The Nantucket Massachusetts Police Department is requesting your assistance in recruiting suitable persons for the position of Community Service Officer for the 2016 Summer Season.

Community Service Officers (CSO) are not armed and perform a variety of duties and services in support of basic police operations and functions which do not require the legal powers of a sworn police officer. This experience can prove to be invaluable to any individual who desires to enter the field of law, law enforcement or any of the social sciences. CSO’s are generally assigned to bicycle, foot patrol and beach patrol. CSO’s are required to purchase their own uniforms to Department specifications. The Department does provide duty belts and other duty equipment other than basic uniform apparel. The starting hourly rate for CSO’s is $16.00 per hour. Housing for the summer is available for $95.00 per week.

The hiring process consists of a criminal background check, oral interview and a physical examination. The interviews are scheduled to occur April 2 & 3, 2016. For successful applicants, there will be a training program scheduled to start on June 6, 2016 and then employment will continue through Labor Day. In order to qualify for a Reserve Police Officer position you must have previously COMPLETED an approved Basic Reserve/ Intermittent Police Academy.

The U.S Probation & Pretrial Services Office for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts is currently accepting applications for full-time student intern positions. It is expected that interns will be selected to work in any of our five locations in Boston, Lawrence, Springfield, Taunton and Worcester, as needed. The term of the appointments are expected to extend for up to a period of one year.

Position Overview

The incumbent may be asked to perform a variety of duties throughout the Probation Office. These may include entering documents into the office’s case management system, greeting and directing visitors to the Probation Office, copying, scanning and organizing case files. Provide support to Probation Officers, as needed. Special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants for this position must be able to deal effectively with the staff of the Probation Office and the public. The individual selected must understand and abide by the rules, policies and regulations of the Court. He or she must possess the ability to function as a replacement worker for other workers in leave status. General computer and word processing skills, including a working proficiency in Microsoft Office products, are required. A team attitude, attention to detail and a willingness to adapt to a changing work environment are essential to maintain the Court’s quality standards. Professional or businesslike approach and attire are required at all times.

Education

To qualify, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent, some college preferred.

FBI Background Investigation

As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must successfully complete a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background investigation, defined as a technical fingerprint search of the criminal history records of the FBI national fingerprint database.

Hours

Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (Boston, Lawrence, Taunton and Worcester), 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Springfield). Some flexibility in start and end times, as approved by the Chief Probation Officer and Divisional Supervisors.

Responsibilities:

  • Locate containers
  • Remove containers from shelving, check for missing and/or charged out containers, and empty locations immediately
  • Place containers on streamliners in order, facing the same direction and with transfer numbers visible
  • Initial report and hand over documentation
  • Move records to Designated Disposal Review Area
  • Stack the records on pallet(s)

 

Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Warehouse experience desired
  • Must be able to lift boxes up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb ladders to reach shelving up to 14 feet high
