Located in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, Berkshire Outdoor Center operates a year-round outdoor education program. Our operation serves around 12,000 youth and adults from around New England and beyond, the majority being from Boston and New York City areas. Typical groups include schools, youth groups, community organizations, corporate groups and other retreats and conferences. We also run Family Camps and Women’s Wellness Weekends.

Seasonal Employment Options

Because we run all year long, we are always looking for great staff. Staff work with us from as little as a few weekends to as much as several years.

Fall Season

Program Instructor Job Description

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: BOC Program Coordinator

General Function: The BOC Program Instructor (PI) is responsible for leading activities in the fields of outdoor education, leadership development, teambuilding and adventure recreation. Additionally, PIs are responsible for leading large group activities, evening programs and supervised check-in, check-out, arrival and departure procedures. Additionally, PIs perform routine cleaning and dish duties. Occasionally, PIs are responsible for overnight supervision of guests and/or as hosts of groups.

Qualifications Requirements

You must:

  • Be highly motivated to work in a variety of roles, particularly in the outdoors
  • Be able to teach outdoor education skills to a diverse age range in a variety of environments
  • Have the desire to work with children, youth, teens and adults of all backgrounds
  • Be prepared to work in a wide variety of areas – including Outdoor Education, Environmental Education, Adventure & Recreation, Group & Conference Retreats
  • Be flexible with scheduling and fulfilling additional duties

  • Serve as a host/liaison to a group, which may include serving as the on-call personnel on a rotating or stand alone basis
  • Participate in routine cleaning of buildings and dishwashing duties
  • Assist in training other staff in areas of expertise
  • Keep inventories of BCCYMCA stock and equipment
  • Participate in trainings, meetings and other professional development opportunities

Position:        Bulb Sale Coordinator

Salary:            $12.50/hr

Hours:           10-20 hours per week, except 40 hours during the last week

This is a temporary, part-time position with the potential for growth

Berkshire Conservation District is seeking a part-time Bulb Sale Coordinator to start immediately to coordinate and oversee the 2014 Fall Bulb Sale fundraiser. The position will run July through October with the possibility of extending into next year for the 2015 spring seedling sale. There is also the possibility, should the right candidate be found, to hire the incumbent at more hours and responsibilities to also serve as part-time office administrator.

The incumbent must be trustworthy, responsible, and organized. The Coordinator is responsible for processing customer orders, confirming orders and shipments with wholesale suppliers, media outreach and publicity, updating the customer database, coordinating volunteers, overseeing sale work week and sale pickup day, and handling overstock sales and donations. Experience with coordinating events and volunteers is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Computer skills: spreadsheets and word processing, MS Office Programs (including Access and Excel)
  • Multi-tasking, staying organized, meeting deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience:

Ideally, the candidate would have some level of experience and would be able to jump right in and write programs at Greylock. But experience is not required. This would be a temporary position. It could be characterized as a summer internship. But, the person could be brought back during breaks or might be able to continue in the role as a contract or part-time employee.

Job Description: This position greets customers, assists customers with store inquiries, answers the phone and/or directs callers, tabulates purchases using the register for transactions. Use safe money handling procedures and secure transaction practices.
Greet customers and render assistance as necessary responding to inquiries of products and merchandise.

  • Answers phone and responds to inquiries or direct calls for appropriate resolution.
  • Operates cash register tabulating transactions, accepting payments, giving change, bagging purchases and processing employee or faculty discounts as appropriate. Starts up and shuts down register, trouble shoots, counts down register, perform cashier audits, etc. Balances the cash drawer including checks and the credit card receipts and student charge slips.

  • Test EAS security system daily and approach customers who set off EAS system investigating alarms, resolving issue and logging EAS activations.

  • Carry and shelve merchandise inventory; may also pull and package merchandise for return to vendors. Straightens merchandise, stocks shelves, prices merchandise and may assist in setting up displays and signs. May be required to mop, vacuum, clean shelves and take out trash.
  • Ensure inventory controls tags are removed and/or replaced on merchandise according to company standards as applicable.
  • Pick, process and pack orders for shipping in accordance with Retail Store Operations
  • Fill in for other employees during absences, for breaks and lunches, and during periods of high volume.
  • May perform data entry or type simple correspondence including printing and system back-up.
  • Take inventory as needed and may have responsibility for ordering general merchandise items (snacks, beverages, newspapers, magazines, etc.).

Tanglewood Public Representative, 12 positions, deadline March 1

Tanglewood Guide/Public Representative of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Lenox, MA

The Management Office is looking for outgoing, energetic individuals to create a staff of twelve Guides/Public Representatives for the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer season at Tanglewood, located in the beautiful Berkshires. Work as a public representative for the BSO, interacting with patrons over the phone and in person. Provide information and assistance to the Tanglewood Public and help to ensure a positive experience for them. You will meet and greet the public, help orient them to the grounds and offer guidance to all public activities at Tanglewood. You will also perform backstage security duties during concerts and rehearsals, interacting with patrons and monitoring access to restricted areas. Benefits include access to all BSO and student concerts, rehearsals and various special events, as well as an inside perspective of BSO administrative operations across all levels and departments. Work closely with, and in support of, BSO management staff, and occasionally assist Guest Artists. Qualifications: Some knowledge of music or the music business (need not be restricted to classical genre); specific interest in arts administration is desirable.
