You Are Not Alone

As we continue to distance ourselves from each other socially there are plenty of ways we can still connect to combat the isolation and loneliness we may be experiencing. Were we may not be able to connect physically most of us have at least one way we can connect with others digitally. Whether it be a laptop, smart phone, tablet or a desktop as long as you have internet connection, you have human connection. Programs like FaceTime, Skype, Zoom and others that enable you to see each other and interact in real-time can help bring us together even while remaining apart.  Social media platforms are also a good way to stay in touch with others during these uncertain times. Checking in on family, friends and co workers all done from behind the safety of your screen can make a difference in someones day and mood. These interactions are a great way to stay in contact as well as help alleviate the loneliness of being socially isolated.

There are many celebrates that are turning to social media in these uncertain times to help combat the loneliness and anxiety people may be experiencing while cooped up in their homes. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, and even TikTok are bringing people together in ways generations before us couldn’t have imagined and many are taking full advantage of that. Performers like John Legend and Chrissy Teigen  as well as the lead singer from Coldplay, Chris Martin, have live streamed concerts for fans over social media to help raise spirits in this turbulent time. There are many comedians who are holding shows using these platforms either for free or with the suggestion of a donation to a shelter or organization helping those in need. For example, the comedian Maria Bamford is offering one hour time slots with her to “help” you with writing, she jokes on her Twitter account (@mariabamfoo), and only asks that you make a donation to the Downtown Women’s Shelter in Los Angeles (@DWCweb). Late night talk show host Stephen Colbert has started doing his show from his home each night, helping keep a small sense of normalcy in our lives and bring some laughter in a time when people need it most.

Whoever you may follow or friend on social media be mindful of opportunities to connect with others and fill your time with positive activities to reduce stress and anxiety. Keep in contact with family and friends using technology and find new, innovative ways to stay connected. We all need human interaction and with some easily installed programs and a little internet know-how you too can be ready to combat the isolation and loneliness we all may be dealing with over the next few weeks.
