Berkshire Botanical Garden is seeking an educator for this summer’s Farm and Garden Program at the Berkshire Hills Regional School District. The Farm and Garden Program strengthens students’ connection to their local food system through hands-on activities related to farming and gardening. Students in the program will be actively maintaining a garden at the schools; learning to cook with food harvested from their garden and other local farmers; meeting local farmers and food advocates; and taking part in a student-run service learning project.

The position runs for six weeks: a mandatory week of training and five weeks of programming. The position begins on Monday, June 27, 2016 and ends on Wednesday, August 3, 2016. Salary and Hours: $14/hour, 18-24 hours/week

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage and guide 5th and 6th grade students through farm and garden-based service learning projects.
  • Prepare and maintain materials and supplies needed for each day’s lesson.
  • Maintain a good relationship with other teachers, organizations, and administrators at the school.
  • Communicate behavior or medical issues to the directors at school and BBG.
  • Identify and meet all student needs to the best of your ability, and serve as a role model for the program’s students.
  • The Educator will report to the Youth Education Coordinator. Assist with other activities as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children required.
  • Must be highly responsible, self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working outside all day
  • An abundance of patience for working with children as well as a good sense of humor and strong work ethic.
  • Be able to successfully pass a CORI and SORI background check
  • Physically able to work outside all day and lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have graduated high school by start of the program.
  • Experience with crafts, gardening, and farming experience preferred.
  • Experience facilitating youth in teambuilding and service-learning projects preferred.

Housekeeper

Our large, active B & B in Lenox, The Cornell Inn, seeks qualified people to work part-time as  housekeepers during the high season and possibly beyond. Our housekeepers clean rooms and common spaces. Each room requires about 30-45 minutes to clean, and there may be as many as six to eight rooms to turn over on a busy day.  Examples of housekeeping tasks include: making beds, washing floors, cleaning bathrooms, dusting and polishing furniture, doing laundry, emptying waste baskets, vacuuming rooms, halls and stairs. Also, housekeepers might help in the kitchen by waiting on guests at breakfast, clearing tables, and washing dishes. This is a physical job that also requires climbing stairs several times a day. Hours average as many as 6 hours per day in season.

Housekeepers must be able to work quickly and efficiently, and be able to speak clearly and be understood by guests. Must have neat appearance, clean record, reliable transportation, and provide proof of ability to work in the U.S.  These people must be able to work a flexible schedule, including most weekends, holidays, and weekdays. The position begins at 11:00 a.m., and can end as late as 4:00 p.m. Compensation is $10.00/hour.

New teammates must be able to:

  • Clean and maintain the common areas of the Inn to meet property standards.
  • Vacuum carpets, upholstered furniture, and/or draperies.
  • Empty wastebaskets, and transport other trash and waste to disposal areas.
  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and/or polish floors, using brooms, mops
  • Dust and polish furniture and equipment.
  • Keep walkways, stairs, and all other public spaces maintained.
  • Clean restroom areas and replace paper products.
  • Wash windows within rooms

 

Qualification:

  • Must be detail oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with cleaning products and equipment as well as cleaning techniques.
  • Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs)
  • Frequent lifting, pushing of supplies and equipment.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending and kneeling.
  • Must be able to work independently and follow instructions regarding priorities of tasks or functions.
  • Must learn the standards for cleanliness and maintenance of all common areas inside and outside.

  • Thoroughly understands and adheres to proper credit, check-cashing and cash-handling policies and procedures.
  • Answers the phone and uses proper telephone etiquette.
  • Can make and confirm reservations over the phone and those submitted online.
  • Can maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, even in a stressful situation.
  • Is available to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Has previous hotel/bed and breakfast experience.
  • Can lift up to 25lbs
