Tour Guide – PT – Arrowhead

Herman Melville’s Arrowhead (part of the Berkshire County Historical Society) is looking for storytellers with a passion for history. Our guides are on the front line, making the history of Arrowhead come alive for thousands of visitors a season.  Be part of the place where Herman Melville raised a family, farmed, and wrote Moby-Dick and other literary works.

Essential Functions:

This is a part-time, seasonal position, May to October. Daytime and weekend hours are available. Arrowhead Guides are responsible for:

  • Leading and facilitating interpretive experiences for visitors of all ages.
  • Welcoming and orienting visitors to the Berkshire Historical Society and Arrowhead, providing excellent customer service and promoting membership
  • Learning the interpretive materials and participating ongoing study of the history of Arrowhead and Berkshire County
  • Following best practices in safety, collections care and security, in order to protect the collections, farm, house and visitors.

Qualifications:

  • have 1-3 years experience with a teaching, museum, customer service, and/or theater background (preferred, but not required – training provided)
  • possess a degree in history, education, or a related field (preferred, but not required; current history students encouraged to apply)
  • are friendly, active listeners with excellent conversational and public speaking skills
  • are intellectually curious and open to learning and sharing new information
  • are professional and team-oriented
  • are respectful of all visitors and able to provide exceptional customer service
  • are flexible and willing to meet the needs and interests of visitors
  • are reliable and committed to the mission of Arrowhead and Berkshire Historical Society.

Skills:

  • have the ability to handle multiple tasks and the unexpected with a calm demeanor
  • ability to work with staff, volunteers and visitors comfortably and welcomingly

Other:

  • have the flexibility to work on weekends, and some evenings
  • are able to stand and walk for long periods of time and climb multiple flights of stairs.

This is a part-time, seasonal position, May to October.  The Visitor Center Assistants can work a minimum of one day/week.  Arrowhead is open 9:30 – 5 daily.

Arrowhead Visitors Center Assistants are responsible for:

  • Welcoming and orienting visitors to the Berkshire Historical Society and Arrowhead, providing excellent customer service and promoting membership
  • Operating a cash register and cashing out at the end of the day.
  • Keeping the Visitors Center, including the restrooms, clean and tidy
  • Learning the interpretive materials and participating ongoing study of the history of Arrowhead and Berkshire County
  • Following best practices in safety, collections care and security, in order to protect the collections, farm, house and visitors.

Qualifications:
