Job Description

Catholic Charities Agency (CCA) of the Diocese of Springfield and Berkshire Interfaith Organizing (BIO) seek a Community Organizer who has a passion for social justice and a strong desire to work with diverse Catholic parishes who seek to organize for systemic change. The Community Organizer will help BIO leaders strengthen and grow their organization by building relationships, increasing the number of member parishes, developing additional leaders in member parishes, and engaging in effective issue campaigns to win significant gains in local and statewide social justice issues.

BIO is an interfaith organization of clergy, their congregations and their regional affiliates who, together, grounded in faith seek to make justice real in our community. Our member groups are committed to working together for greater justice and a better quality of life for all people. We pursue these goals by building community across lines of income, religion and geography, developing the leadership skills of members within our congregations and organizations.

Responsibilities
As assigned by the CCA Executive Director and under the supervision of the BIO Lead Organizer, it is the responsibility of the CCA/BIO Community Organizer to work in collaboration with staff and leaders of BIO and with the support of the InterValley Project (IVP) to:

• Develop and maintain relationships with clergy, parish staff and lay members of Catholic parishes in the Berkshires to strengthen or recruit their participation and membership in BIO;

• Identify and recruit new leaders in current and potential BIO member parishes, through individual meetings, participation in formal and informal training, parish listening meetings and issue campaigns;

• Work with parish leaders to develop congregational organizing teams, and engage other parish members in the work described above;

• Participate and assist in the recruitment of leaders to participate in leadership training;

• Work with leaders on BIO fundraising campaigns, membership dues collection and provide assistance with grant writing when needed to help the organization achieve its fundraising goals;

• Increase the number of member Catholic parishes in BIO; and

• Carry out other responsibilities, as assigned by the BIO Lead Organizer.

Qualifications and Attributes

1. Passion for social and economic justice, and strong commitment to faith- and values-based organizing.
2. Experience as a community or congregation-based organizer, preferred.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop leaders, help them organize, and bring issue campaigns and other projects to successful conclusions.
4. Proven track record in grassroots fundraising.
5. High energy, exceptional team-building and strong one-on-one relationship-building skills.
6. Strong communication skills: listening, speaking, writing, and computer skills.
7. Experience working with diverse religious, ethnic and cultural traditions communities; bilingual ability in Spanish strongly preferred.
8. Own transportation and auto insurance required.
9. Working hours must be flexible and will include some evenings and weekends.

Under direction of the Information Technology Manager, the Network Specialist will be responsible for the following, including but not limited to: data backup and protection, spam filter, anti-virus, terminal services, and a basic virtualization environment. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Perform all routine, corrective and preventative maintenance of natural gas fired boilers and heating systems, refrigeration, ventilation and air conditioning, and domestic water components and systems.
2) Install new and replacement natural gas fired boilers and heating systems, refrigeration, ventilation and air conditioning, and domestic water components and systems.
3) Perform testing, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and corrective action on natural gas fired boilers and heating systems, refrigeration, ventilation and air conditioning, and domestic water components and systems.
4) Perform routine monitoring and as necessary logging of natural gas fired boilers and heating systems, refrigeration, ventilation and air conditioning, and domestic water components and systems parameters.
5) Review and carry out assigned work orders and sign off for close out of completed work orders.
6) Non-routine responsibilities may include: minor maintenance relating to electrical, plumbing and septic, carpentry, refrigeration, kitchen appliances, doors and lock shop, small engine maintenance, vehicles and trailers, masonry, signage and ordering of supplies.
7) Extra duties as assigned: onsite and offsite moving and event services, painting, snow removal and de-icing, landscape maintenance, pest control, swimming pool equipment, welding, supply deliveries, and construction project assistance

II. SUMMARY OF SERIES:

Incumbents of positions in this series install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related fixtures; check heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment for malfunctions; maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; and perform related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

III. ORGANIZATIONAL LEVELS:

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanic I is the entry-level technical job in this series.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanic II is the first-level supervisory job in this series.

IV. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES COMMON TO ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:

1. Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping by using refrigeration, pipe fitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools and work aids to join tubing and/or pipes; to cut and thread pipes; to solder or braze joints; to mount compressor and condenser units; and to connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to electrical power sources.

2. Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators; by adjusting controls in testing joints and connections for gas leaks; by injecting refrigerant and adjustment valves, controls and pumps; and by using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, amprobes, etc. to ensure proper operation.

3. Maintains, rebuilds and repairs by replacing worn or defective parts such as switches, fuses, thermostats and electrical wiring; by pumping specified gas or fluids into systems; by adding necessary liquids; by lubricating motors and bearings; and by changing filters.

4. Calculates heat loads for new installations; analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algericides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.

5. Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems; drilling holes for mounting brackets; screwing, boring, riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets of systems.

VIII. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanic I:

Incumbents of positions at this level may exercise functional supervision (i.e., over certain but not all work activities or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1-5 trades personnel.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanic II:

Incumbents of positions at this level exercise direct supervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor) over 1-9 technical and/or trades personnel.

IX. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) Mechanics are exposed to the harmful effects of noxious fumes, chemicals, inadequate ventilation, excessive machine noises and high voltage equipment; and work in confined or cramped spaces.

X. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:

Assessment Stabilization Case Manager

The Assessment Stabilization Case Manager shall be responsible for initial contact with households presenting for services either via the telephone, e-mail, mail or in-person and perform an initial needs based assessment on said households; he/she shall be responsible for coordinating needs with available financial assistance and other social service resources. He/she shall be responsible for the implementation of initial, and when appropriate, in-depth screening and assessments of all referred customer households. Said assessment process may include the development of a comprehensive household self-sufficiency plan. They shall also be responsible for keeping accurate confidential files for each customer intake; maintaining a computer database with pertinent information on current and potential customers; providing information to customers on all internal and external programs and resources; and making appropriate referrals to internal staff and external resources. In addition, the Case Manager shall provide supervisors, and other designee with all information needed for required reports and assist said parties in the preparation of all required reports including any reporting or data entry required through program software systems. When necessary, the Case Manager shall assist staff or their supervisor with their respective responsibilities. The person in this position reports to the Vice President of Development.

Requirements:

  • Case Management and assessment experience with homeless individuals and families
  • Experience with crisis intervention regarding issues such as homelessness, mental health and substance abuse
  • Experience assisting customers with housing barriers including legal, financial, psychological and criminal
  • Knowledge and experience with MA state service systems including but not limited to, Department of Transitional Assistance, Department of Housing & Community Development, The Department of Children & Families and the Department of Mental Health
  • Knowledge and experience with service agencies and resources for homeless individuals and families
