The Notchview Caretaker plays an important role in representing The Trustees of Reservations within the West Region, and in working to perpetuate the high standards of stewardship established by the organization.  The Notchview Caretaker contributes to pursuing The Trustees of Reservations’ goals in the area of resource protection and land conservation as well as our goals regarding sustainability, volunteerism, inclusion and diversity, and engagement.

The Notchview Caretaker will reside in the Notchview Reservation Gatehouse, and is responsible for ensuring the preservation of Notchview and the Gatehouse. The caretaker will use best practices to ensure the effective preservation and interpretation of Notchview Reservation, and to support all enterprise and program work associated with the Nordic ski program and Notchview to the public.

The Notchview Caretaker is part of the Windsor Management Unit, and reports to the Windsor Management Unit Superintendent.

Responsibilities:

General Duties (weekly)

  • Maintenance , Visitor Center and Reception desk (during winter) – related duties as assigned (about 16 hours per week, year-round)
  • Security duties listed below and as assigned (about 2 hours per week, year-round)

Maintenance Duties: (examples)

  • Perform directed landscape maintenance tasks
  • Perform simple carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance tasks
  • Help staff visitor center during the Nordic ski season (generally December through March). Duties may include greeting visitors, providing staffing support for Point of Sale transactions for trail passes and equipment rental, trail grooming and other Nordic ski operations
  • Pick up litter and other debris on the grounds. Ensure the Visitor’s center is clean and tidy, including bathrooms
  • Work with volunteers to accomplish property management tasks and engagement objectives
  • May be required to assist with stewardship work and other properties in the Windsor Management Unit, for special events, projects or emergencies, some of which may occur outside of normal working hours
  • Communicate directly with the Windsor Management Unit Superintendent providing promote membership and volunteerism when appropriate
  • Snow removal to ensure access to all areas at Notchview
  • Maintain a regular presence on the property and respond to emergencies

Security Duties: (examples)

  • Walk around and secure the visor center, shop and parking area each evening
  • Provide off-hours security for the reservation, responding to security issues as needed (including contracting police)
  • Inform visitors of property rules and regulations

Qualifications:

  • Basic carpentry, handyman and/or equipment operator skills
  • Must enjoy working with diverse groups of people, have excellent people skills, and be comfortable and competent speaking to the public
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to use and maintain hand toold and power equipment
  • Able to handle the physical demand of the job
  • Familiarity with Nordic skiing and trail operations
  • A valid drivers’ license, and satisfactory driving record as outlined on the Trustees’ driving policy
  • A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI)

Hours, Salary and Benefits:

The Notchview Caretaker is a part-time, year-round, non-exempt position. Housing at the Notchview Reservation Gatehouse is provided in exchange for approximately 17 hours of work per week. The Trustees will pay all electric bills; the Caretaker is responsibly for heating costs (oil) and all other utilities.
