Position Summary:
The Safety Specialist works as a member of the Corporate Safety department. This position supports and serves as a resource to Facilities Management in meeting their goals and accountabilities by providing clear communication of policies, standards, and procedures. This position is directed by the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager and may be called upon to give direct support to any given location.
Responsibilities:
Specific accountabilities include:
Environmental
- 100% Environmental Compliance with all applicable regulations
- Allow for uninterrupted manufacturing operations
- Drive efficiency and accuracy in compliance reporting
- Drive strategic efforts to ensure continued compliance based on knowledge/updates of new/current Environmental law promulgation
- Operational oversight of Waste Water Treatment Plant and associated company infrastructure to meet EHS program requirements/goals
Health
- Oversee Universal and Solid waste management
- Maintain policies and procedures on use of Hazardous Chemicals. Maintain MSDS database and communication requirements
- Ensure working environment is safe and free of hazardous chemicals and unsafe conditions
- Provide technical support and assistance to Operations Managers/Engineers regarding work environment concerns
Safety
- Lead continuous improvement methods, programs, initiatives to continually improve Safety and Working Environment
- Implement Behavior Based Safety Programs
- Collect, maintain, analyze and distribute plant safety data in accordance with business and site specific guidance
- Interact daily with employees to promote safety programs, accident prevention and environmental compliance to include safety expertise and guidance to site operational teams as needed
- Develop and implement effective safety communication plans utilizing various multi-media methods
- Promote standardization of health and safety programs, procedures, and tools to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practice
- Lead incident investigations to determine probable root cause and develop corrective actions
Training
- Maintain, schedule, and report on EHS training and develop HSE training materials as directed
- Analyze and select appropriate training options, including use of third party vendors, modification of commercial materials to fit needs, etc.
- Provide EHS briefings and training sessions as appropriate to fulfill regulatory requirements and foster a safe working environment
Safety
- Monitor Manufacturing areas and communicate regularly with personnel to identify safety issues and opportunities for improvement. Work with leadership and other applicable personnel to address issues and identify improvement opportunities
- In conjunction with leadership, ensure consistent implementation of Safe Production and Ergonomics Programs and compliance with Environmental, FDA, ISO, OSHA, and other safety standards that may apply
- Develop and implement procedures and programs to enhance a safe work environment and prevent workplace injuries
- Interpret OSHA regulations and provide consultation to management regarding potential vulnerable areas
- Analyze and report key metrics in the area of safety incidents
- Manage incidents to include reporting, root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Lead Safe Production/Ergonomic Meetings with applicable personnel to emphasize the company’s safety goals and applicable safety programs
- Conduct incident investigations for manufacturing areas as needed. Document regular work site Safe Production/Ergonomic audits, and prepare documentation as requested by management and required by statute
- Conduct appropriate safety training in a timely manner and as required
- Record Safety Training and other safety and environmental documentation as needed
- Review on an annual basis all safety policies and procedures to ensure content is in accordance with applicable laws and regulations
- Manage Workers’ Compensation process and claim filing
Environmental
- Ensure environmental issues are managed in accordance with Company, local, state and federal rules and regulations
- Identify and drive environmental strategic efforts ensuring efficiency in reporting and compliance with applicable regulations at all levels
- Participate in site emergency response, including preparedness and business continuity programs
- Serve as point of contact for regulatory and insurance inspections and reviews
- Plans and directs teams in each facility for the purpose of conducting incident investigation activities to ensure that all incidents are investigated, root causes are identified, supporting documentation to management including recommendations for control measures, in order to prevent reoccurrence.
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to ergonomic analysis of jobs to minimize exposure to hazards in the workplace, training, incident investigation, auditing, etc.
- Conducts task analysis through quantification of job tasks in all locations to assist facilities management, the Medical department and Human Resources in identifying and documenting the physical demands for positions in the company. Incumbent will compile and maintain all documentation for physical demands and update as required.
- Administer various safety programs to insure Facilities Managers meet compliance requirements with Federal OSHA standards. This includes training, evaluation, auditing and monitoring implementation of program elements.
- All other projects assigned by HS&E Manager to support department initiatives. This includes reporting requirements for all assigned projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Engineering, Safety or Industrial Hygiene, related field or equivalent
- Eight to ten years in a paper manufacturing or similar industrial manufacturing environment with emphasis on equipment, chemical and material handling safety
- Extensive knowledge of Federal Environmental Law including Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Superfund Act, and Mass. State Environmental regulations including Air, Water, Solids Waste, Wetlands, Greenhouse Gas regulations
- Proven leadership and influencing skills
- Strong business and EHS process driven mindset
- Analytical skills and experience in Project Management, problem solving, root cause analysis, sense of urgency and relentless passion for achieving results
- Experience successfully implementing behavior based safety programs
- Experience implementing ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 systems
- Experience with state and federal OSHA regulations as well as other regulatory standards (i.e. ANSI, NIOSH, NFPA, NEC)
- Experience recognizing, evaluating, and recommending controls for workplace hazards as well as work -related injury and illness
- Demonstrated knowledge of documentation development procedures
- Excellent verbal and written (technical) communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and foster a compliant / safety-first culture in the workplace
- High energy/self-motivated/change agent with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
- Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate individual project activities within a larger project
- Ability to pass and maintain security clearance with the US Treasury Department

- Associates degree from an accredited college
