Self-Care Saturday

Welcome back readers! It sure has been a long week of trying to keep up with all the changes being thrown our way and it’s finally Saturday, time for a break!

Taking a break for many of us often is the few minutes we take in the afternoon to try to eat a sandwich at our desk while we answer emails or folding the laundry while we watch our favorite show after the kids go to bed. Person alone in natureWhile it may feel like we are doing something we enjoy or that we are “on break” we can so quickly fill that time with more tasks. After a while this can lead us to get burnt out and in need of a recharge. Self-care is any activity that you do to care for your mental, physical and emotional health with intention. Self-care is like recharging your own battery.

Where the ways of doing this may be simple, they can also be a challenge to incorporate into your daily life.  Finding the things that make you happy and feel recharged can help you find a good self-care routine. The video below , where it may say the tips are for when you feel broken, it just an unfortunate title. These tips are good for anyone looking for a few quick ways to practice self-care.

Learning to practice self-care and doing it regularly can really start to have a positive effect on your life in a multitude of ways. In the TED Talk below, Malebo Sephodi talks about how self-care is not a selfish pursuit, instead it is something she can use as a tool to fuel her in her pursuits in life. You too can use your own self-care as a tool to fuel your pursuit of your goals by letting it build and recharge your body, mind and spirit.

Self-care and what recharges us is different for everyone. For one of us it can be reading a good book,  and for others meditating or writing in a gratitude journal. Some of us may enjoy cooking, taking a bath, a nap or doing yoga. Whatever it is that recharges you in a positive way do that daily with intention. Take a moment to appreciate this time with yourself, caring for the person you spend the the most time with, yourself.

Make yourself a priority!

These recent levels of uncertainty and elevated anxiety in our world makes self-care even more important! Taking time to turn off the news, put down the phone and take a moment to care for yourself can make a big difference in your mood and level of anxiety.Self care is not selfish Caring for yourself is not selfish, it is necessary for you to be at your best.
