Hi! My name is Nate Booker, Sr., I go by Nate because my given name, Nathaniel, was used as a form of abuse growing up. I don’t have any problems with someone else having the same name but if I hear it when referencing me or trying to get my attention, I cringe at it. I haven’t and won’t change it because it serves as a reminder of where I’ve come from and what I’ve been through so that I can be a safe space and a source of comfort to those who are experiencing the things that I’ve experienced. My favorite quote is by Herbert Ward which says, “Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime.” It does, it really does.
I had no direction when I graduated from high school in 1989 and no one to guide me and advise me on what to do when my life once I graduated. For that reason, I went into the Army immediately after high school (1990) but once I got out of the Army, I still had no clue about how to pursue a secondary education or how to go about doing it or being consistent with it. Because of this, it took me almost 35 years to the day to finally get enrolled into college and now I finally know what I want to do with my life. I have always been drawn to and had a love for computers and electronics so here I am enrolled at Berkshire Community College in the Networking & Cybersecurity course. I am coming to the end of my second semester which I admit has been the most difficult so far, not because of the curriculum but more because of my heavy course load of 20 credits. I’ve learned a great deal and made some great friends and one of the most important lessons that I’ve learned is to be kind to myself and not to overload myself even if I feel that I can complete the accompanying assignments successfully.
My goal upon graduating is to find a position as a Network Systems Analyst while pursuing my bachelor’s degree and ultimately find a position in my dream field which would be Cyber-Forensic Investigations.
