Notable Skills
During my Liberal Arts studies at Berkshire Community College, I have explored courses that have broadened my worldview and skillset. The following list consists of prerequisites and elected credits that have had the most beneficial impact on my educational and career interests.
Digital Photography:
‘An introduction to photographic processes that use computer-based technologies. Students learn the basics of image capture with digital cameras and, from there, explore the world of digital image processing, utilizing Adobe Photoshop to prepare and modify images. The course will examine digital photography as a creative process, focusing on its aesthetic power and use in contemporary society.’
This course sparked my interest in taking my passion for photography to the next level. It was the first time I recognized that a career as a photographer was a genuine possibility. I began to understand the history and mechanics of digital cameras, work with Color Theory, and implement the epiphany of knowledge into my Art.
Introduction to Interpersonal Communications:
‘A study of interpersonal communication designed to examine, develop, strengthen, and maintain interpersonal relationships. Discussions focus on nonverbal (proxemics, territoriality) and verbal (semantics, paralanguage) communication. Presentations, class discussions, and group techniques are used in class.’
After graduating from Taconic High School class of 2020, I entered my first semester at Berkshire Community College the following fall with minimal face-to-face contact with my peers and administration. This course served as a reminder to stay in touch and be mindful of how we perceive ourselves and others; everyone was facing the same pandemic, but how that pandemic affected someone’s personal experiences varies.
Understanding and Responding to Trauma:
‘Exploration involving a basic understanding of trauma, both on an individual and larger systemic level. This foundational knowledge will be woven into learning opportunities exploring trauma-related issues specific to the student’s area of study or interest.’
The benefits of this course go far beyond any academic or career interests a person may have; this course has made me a better version of myself and shown me that trauma-informed care can be implemented in personal and professional environments. The assigned text provided in-class and online forum discussions rich with empathy and understanding.
