” Family Partners”
“Room displays and materials reflect respect for various communities, cultural groups and families”
Each classroom hangs up pictures and other decorations to make the classroom more friendly and safe for the children. We have a couple of toddler rooms at the “Y” that have pictures of the kids with their parents hanging on the wall for display. We even have seasonal decorations hung up to get into the season/holiday. I think that it’s important for these things to be put up because not only will it make the classroom more friendly and safe but it will make the children more comfortable and they can always look at their pictures of their parents.
“Opportunities to communicate with and distribute information to families are provided”
Teachers are provided to share any kind of important information to the families whether it’s an injury or a special holiday coming up. Teachers message parents at the “Y” to fill them in on what’s going. For example, a teacher will message a parent and say that their child is not feeling so good and the parent might have to come and bring him/her home. Another example is we have one child in the toddler room with allergies and every week a teacher messages the mother on what the snack menu is and the mother would pick out a snack item that is somewhat similar to the menu. It’s important to have communication with the families because it’s a way to fill them in on important stuff like emergencies or holidays or the way a child is behaving in the classroom.
“Welcomes and respects families”
When families come, we treat them with kindness and respect. Whenever a parent comes to pick up their kid, I say hello and when they leave I tell them things like “have a good night” or “have a good weekend”. Or if we’re down in the gross motor room and the child doesn’t see that their mom or dad is here, I’ll let them come in so the child can see that their parent has come to bring them home. I think that it’s important to greet parents when they come in and greet them when they leave because it’s respectful and you want to get in good grace with the parents.
