Observation
“Objectively observes and records information about children’s behaviors and learning”
Teachers regularly observe a child’s behavior and development process. At the ‘Y’, we all observe the children in the classrooms to see how their brain development is progressing. We see the kids interact with one another, we see kids share toys and of course we’ll see kids putting their hands on one another and start fighting but we always pull them apart. We even see kids show remorse when they did something that they’re not supposed to, for example last week a toddler was poking another toddler in the face and I said that you shouldn’t do that and to apologise. The kid who was poking went up to the toddler she was poking and gave her a kiss on the cheek. It’s important to observe all the kids daily because as teachers we need to see how the kids are behaving and developing mentally.
“Maintains current records on children’s health, safety and behaviour”
Teachers and staff have records about a child’s background (name, gender, medical history etc). The teachers even have forms to write up when a child has been injured. We have had a couple of incidents where a child fell and got a boo-boo on him/her and as a precaution, we have these forms to write down the incident and we have the parent sign it when they come to get their child. We also have attendance sheets for each classroom for the number of children we have. We would write down the time when they arrived and left with either mom or dad or some other relative. That’s for us to know how many kids we have and who have come and gone. It’s important to have all these materials so that we know we have all our kids together and we have write-up sheets and records of an incident or background of a child.
“Establishes cooperative interpersonal relationships with coworkers, colleagues, volunteers and supervisors”
Offering help and support for other co-teachers and staff and supervisors if needed. At the ‘Y’, we have a group chat that we use to communicate with one another so if one of us has to go to the bathroom or if they need to be covered on a break, one of us would go in whichever classroom and assist other co-teachers. It’s important to have a good relationship with your co-teachers, staff and supervisors because not only do you want to get in their good graces but it’s a way to keep the kids safe. At my workplace there has to be 2 or 3 teachers present, the kids cannot be left alone so we work together to make sure that everyone is safe and well.
