Area 3: Partnering with Families and Communities

3 Important Elements of Guiding and Interacting with Children (Family Partners)

“Knows the social service, health and education resources of the community, engaging them when appropriate” (Washington 2017)

Being informed on any possible resources that may be helpful to your families and better help your students. We typically will recommend PDC if we suspect any type of delay in a child’s development and will work on how to respectfully express how this assistance is beneficial to the child and remember not to assign blame or imply that there is something wrong with the child. I’ve also had to inform parents on where to get things like diapers, clothing or hygiene items when in need. Our role in childcare is to support our families within reason and ensure that we have a healthy relationship where they feel comfortable reaching out without judgement.

“Opportunities to communicate with and distribute information to families are provided” (Washington 2017)

Our daycare center uses ProCare to communicate with families and keep them updated throughout the day of activities, meals, diaper changes and naps. We can also upload pictures and send messages back and forth. It allows for a more instant update and more in-depth daily report. Our director uploads our monthly meal menus and calendars for activities and parents can access their bill and make payment.

“Welcomes and respects every family” (Washington 2017)

Each morning, I make it a point to greet parents by name and make the transition smoother as they leave their child with us. I like how comfortable my parents feel leaving them with me and feeling confident that they are loved and safe. My relationship with each parent is crucial to forming a bond with each of my kids which in turn creates a better learning environment for everyone. At pickup I make sure to offer a positive comment about their child’s day and listen to any questions or concerns they may have and provide an appropriate response. Help to resolve conflicts in a timely manner and remain professional.
