Dear Online Student,

Step 1: Is Online Learning for You?

Hybrid and fully online courses can be fun, exciting, challenging, convenient, and enriching.  However, online courses are not for everyone.  Taking an online course requires the same commitment of time, study, and effort as a face-to-face course plus a high degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and independence.  To determine if you will feel comfortable in this learning environment, please review the following:

Step 2: Orientation

If you are brand new to Online Learning at BCC, we strongly advise you to attend a face-to-face Moodle Orientation:

  • Log in to your MyBCC account before coming to the orientation.  You may stop by the Computer Lab on the main campus, Field 102/Field 107, about 20 minutes before the orientation if you need help logging in.
  • Moodle Orientations on Pittsfield Campus:

► Tuesday,        5/28/13, 12:15 – 1:15 pm, F-203

► Wednesday,  5/29/13,   5:30 – 6:30 pm, F-202

  • BCC’s South County Center, 343 Main Street, Great Barrington:

► Tuesday,        5/21/13,   2:00 – 3:00 pm, SCC-4  (come 20 minutes early if you need help logging in to your MyBCC account)

Please note that these orientation and support sessions are not intended to serve as a substitute for any mandatory, course-specific orientation that may be offered by your class instructor.

If you cannot make a face-to-face session, please enroll in the online Student Moodle orientation, which can be accessed by following the steps in the Moodle Users Guide.

Step 3: Accessing Your Courses

  • You will login to your Moodle courses via MyBCC on the BCC home page, http://www.berkshirecc.edu/.  Your Username, Password, and technical requirements can be found in the Moodle Users Guide – available on the Online Learning web pages, and attached to this email.
  • Your online courses will be available on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 8:00 AM – the first day of classes, unless you are otherwise notified.  This means that even though you are registered for the course, it will not appear on your MyBCC page until the first day of classes.
  • Note that BCC online courses are NOT self-paced.  Please see Pages 3-4 for any required on-campus meetings or special software.

Step 4: Order your books

You may get your books at the BCC College Bookstore, through http://www.efollett.com/, or from other providers.  Be sure to get the proper edition and ISBN number, plus any access codes or supplemental material required.  You can reach the Bookstore at 413-236-3065.  The College Store will be open additional hours during the first week of classes: May 28, 29, 30, June 3                            8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Many courses use additional software such as MyBusinessLab, MyMathLab, Mastering Biology, etc.  If your course uses one of these products, it is important you purchase the access code before the course begins.  The bookstore will be able to determine if you need an access code in addition to a text.

Step 5: Download Tools & Apps

Click this link to download applications that you will need for online learning: http://blogs.berkshirecc.edu/onlinelearning/tools-apps/downloads/

Step 6: Get Help

  • If you experience access or connection difficulties from home, Internet access for Moodle course materials is available at the BCC Computer Labs and wireless access from your laptop on campus.  It is strongly recommended that students have access full-time to their own personal computer that has been configured for Moodle use if they are taking fully online courses at BCC.
  • For general help, open the BCC website at http://www.berkshirecc.edu, click the “Online Learning” link in the top menu, and then click the “Help” link on the top menu.  After you have attended the face-to face or online Student Moodle orientation, feel free to explore the resources on the Online Learning webpages.
  • If you have any questions or need help, please email us at onlinehelp@berkshirecc.edu.  Please include your full name, student ID number, the course you are in, and the problem you’re having.  It is important that you type Online Help in the Subject line or your email may be seen as spam and deleted.  You may include your phone number for a quicker resolution.  CC your instructor so they know that you are having technical problems.
  • You may also stop by our Help Desk with questions: when classes are in session
