Berkshire OLLI’s course catalogs are justly famous for featuring beautiful photographs of the Berkshires. Who takes these photographs? OLLI members and friends! Each semester we run a photography contest to choose the next cover photo. The winner gets his or her photograph featured on the cover of OLLI, and receives a free year’s membership in OLLI at BCC.
Our current contest is for the spring and/or summer 2015 catalog cover and the deadline is January 12! You can send your submissions in either jpg, tif or raw high resolution format (images should be at least 3mb in size.) Photographs should be images of the Berkshires and appropriate for a horizontal format, as in the sample at left.
Submission should be emailed to email@example.com and note you don’t have to be an OLLI member to submit. Good luck and we look forward to seeing your images!

Another fascinating hands-on course from OLLI this winter focuses on photography – both the art and the craft. Taught by accomplished photographer Thaddeus Kubis and limited to only twelve students, this course explores, in his words, how to “make images instead of taking pictures.”
Exploring the Two Faces of Photography will be held in the Community Room at the Mason Public Library in Great Barrington. The class begins Tuesday, January 13th and continues for six weekly sessions from 1:30pm to 3pm. More information, including how to register, can be found by clicking here.
As we welcome the new year, consider giving yourself or a friend (or both) the gift of wicked smart classes (with no tests, grades, or homework), lively events, fascinating speakers and more. Give the gift of a one year membership with OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at BCC, and for a limited time we’ll throw in one free class to get you (or a friend) started – a $45 value!

Then we have a winter class for you! Reading Ghost Stories Out Loud with Elizabeth Young, Ph.D.
We will read and discuss American short stories that set out to frighten us, often called “ghost stories” or “stories of suspense.” We will investigate what scares us in such stories, why there is pleasure in being frightened by them, and how they create their effects. The course will include brief lectures, an opportunity for participants to read the assigned stories aloud in class, and discussions of the stories’ literary and cultural significance. Copies of the stories will be provided, as well as a background piece on the short story as a literary genre.
Reading Ghost Stories Out Loud begins Thursday, January 15th and continues weekly for six weeks at the Lenox Library, from 2:15pm-3:45pm. Class tuition is $45, and students must also be members of OLLI at BCC. To register, or for more information, call 413.236.2190.
Warm up your mind and avoid cabin fever this winter by exploring OLLI at BCC’s fascinating array of classes. Our winter session runs from January 13 to February 25th and includes classes on the modern Middle East, photography, Dante’s Inferno, food and the movies, and much more.
