Berkshire County Forecast – Wednesday, Dec. 14

The following forecast is provided by Tiffanie Tomashek, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary: Our nice weather will be coming to an end as high pressure, which has dominated our weather for the past several days, moves offshore, making way for a low pressure system over the Great Plains to head our way. The storm and most of its energy and precipitation will pass well to our north but it will drag its associated warm front over us tonight and then its cold front will pass on Thursday afternoon. As a result, the weather will become overcast tonight and for the subsequent 24 hours. There is a chance of a brief period of rain mixed with sleet and snow around midnight tonight as the warm front moves through and then rain more likely Thursday afternoon with the passage of the cold front. It will then turn windy and colder on Thursday night and Friday as colder air from Canada moves in behind the front.

Wednesday

Partly cloudy.

High temperature near 40 in the hilltowns, with low to mid 40s elsewhere.

West winds at 5-10 mph.

Wednesday Night

Becoming cloudy with a chance of a brief shower of rain or rain mixed with sleet and snow near midnight. Probability of precipitation 40%.

Low temperature in the low to mid 30s.

Winds becoming southerly at 5-10 mph.

Thursday

Overcast and mild. There is the chance of a few scattered light showers in the morning with a period of rain or showers likely in the afternoon. Probability of precipitation 40% in the morning and 80% in the afternoon. Total rainfall between 0.10 and 0.20 inches.

High temperature in the mid 40s.

Southwest winds at 10-20 mph.

Thursday Night

Mostly cloudy with a chance of scattered rain showers turning to snow showers after midnight. Little or no accumulation. Probability of precipitation 40%.

Temperatures falling slowly into the low to mid 30s by morning.

Winds shifting from southwest to northwest and increasing to 15-25 mph by morning, with higher gusts, particularly over the higher terrain.

High temperature in the mid to upper 30s in the hill towns, near 40 in the lower elevations and low 40s in South County.

Northwest winds at 15-25 in the morning diminishing somewhat later in the afternoon.

Berkshire County Forecast – Wednesday Dec. 7

The following forecast is provided by Patricia Jehle, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary: Waves of low pressure continue to move through our area along a very slow moving cold front. This will result in a rainy day today and rain early tonight. As the final low pressure system intensifies off the coast tonight it will finally bring enough cold air into the region to turn the rain to snow around midnight. There will be a quick burst of heavy snow into the early morning hours, ending by 5 or 6am, that will accumulate in the range of 2-6 inches for most parts of Berkshire County. Once the snow ends it will become partly sunny, windy and colder on Thursday through Friday.

Wednesday

Rain, moderate to heavy at times through most of the day, tapering off a bit toward evening. Probability of precipitation 100%. Total rainfall between 0.50 and 0.75 inches.

High temperature steady in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Northwest winds at 5-10 mph.

Wednesday Night

Rain, heavy at times turning to snow around midnight. Snow will fall heavy at times after midnight, tapering off around 5 or 6 am. Rainfall amounts near 0.75 inches. Most areas will receive between 2 and 6 inches of snowfall accumulation with the greater amounts in the higher elevations to the north and west and the lesser amounts in the lower elevations to the south and east. Some “favored” areas in higher elevations in central and northern Berkshire may receive as much as 7 or 8 inches. Probability of precipitation 100%.

Temperatures falling through the 30s to the upper 20s by morning.

Northwest wind strengthening to 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 by morning.

Thursday

Partly sunny, windy and colder.

High temperatures near 30 in the hilltowns, low 30s in the lower elevations of central and northern Berkshire (e.g. Pittsfield and North Adams) and mid 30s in South County.

Northwest winds at 15-25 mph with higher gusts, diminishing later in the afternoon.

Thursday Night

Partly cloudy and cold.

Low temperature near 20.

Light to calm winds.

Friday

Mostly cloudy and slightly milder.

High temperature mid to upper 30s.

South-southwest wind at 5-10 mph.

Berkshire County Forecast – Monday, Dec. 5

The following forecast is provided by Christopher Robillard, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Summary: It will remain unseasonably mild today under the influence of southerly flow around the Bermuda high. We will transition to colder weather as a cold front moves SLOWLY through the region over the next few days. There will be a prolonged period of occasional relatively light rain or showers associated with the frontal passage late tonight into tomorrow night.

Monday

Partly sunny and unseasonably mild.

High temperature in the mid to upper 50s.
