Berkshire County Forecast – Friday, October 28

The following forecast is provided Megan Brady, in conjunction with the  instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the potential for greater than 7 inches of snow Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. The snow will be heavy and wet and many trees still have their leaves. Therefore, there is potential for falling limbs and extensive power outages.

Friday

Mostly sunny and cold for this time of year.

High temperature in the low 40s.

West-northwest wind at 5-15 miles per hour.

Friday Night

Clear early with increasing clouds after midnight.

Low temperature in the mid to upper 20s.

Wind becoming calm.

Saturday

Snow developing in the afternoon. Probability of precipitation 90%. Snow accumulations 2-4 inches by nightfall with the greater amounts in the higher elevations.

High temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.

Northeast wind increasing to 10-15 miles per hour in the afternoon.

Saturday Night

Snow, heavy at times, tapering off after midnight. Total accumulation will likely be in the 8-12 inch range, with more than a foot possible, particularly over the higher terrain.

Temperatures falling into the upper 20s.

Winds northeast shifting to northwest at 10-15 miles per hour with some higher gusts.

Sunday

Cloudy in the early morning with decreasing clouds over the course of the day. Becoming partly cloudy by afternoon.

High temperature in the mid to upper 30s.

Gusty northwest wind at 10-20 mph.

Here is an updated forecast for Thursday’s storm based upon the latest model data from this morning……

Thursday and Thursday Night

Rain in the morning, mixing with snow from north to south and over the higher terrain by noon. By 2 pm it should be all snow over the higher terrain and northern portions of Berkshire County. Becoming all snow everywhere by 5 pm. Snow will taper off by 8 – 9 pm.

Snowfall totals:  A slushy inch or so in the low elevations of the south(e.g. Great Barrington)……1-2 inches in the lower elevations of central and northern Berkshire (e.g. Pittsfield)…..3-4 inches in the higher elevations to the south……3-6 inches in the hill towns of central and northern Berkshire with the highest amounts in the highest elevations. Most of the accumulation will be on grassy surfaces. However, the roads may become icy overnight as temperatures drop into the 20s.

Berkshire County Forecast – Wednesday, October 26

Wednesday

Overcast with occasional light rain, tapering off later in the afternoon. Probability of precipitation 90%.

Cool, with high temperatures in the mid 40s.

Light southerly winds.

Wednesday Night

Overcast with a chance of light rain. A steady light rain likely developing by morning. Probability of precipitation 60%.

Temperatures dropping to the mid to upper 30s by morning.

Winds light, becoming northeast by morning.

Thursday

A snow/rain mix will gradually change to all snow by late afternoon. The changeover will occur from north to south and in the higher elevations first. For example, northern hilltowns will see a changeover during the morning but it will probably not change over in Great Barrington until late afternoon. Snowfall totals by dark will range from a slushy accumulation of less than an inch in low elevations to the south to as much as 2 – 4 inches in the hilltowns in central and northern Berkshire. Probability of precipitation 90%.

Temperatures falling into the low 30s by late in the day.

Winds northeast at 5-10 miles per hour.

Thursday Night

Snow, tapering off by midnight. Total accumulations ranging from 1-3 inches in the lower elevations to as much as 4-8 inches in the high terrain. Probability of precipitation 90%.

Cold with temperatures falling into the mid 20s by morning.

Winds northeast, shifting to northwest after midnight at 5-10 miles per hour.

Friday

Partly cloudy and cold.

High temperatures near 40.

Northwest wind at 5-10 miles per hour.

 

Berkshire County Forecast – Monday, October 24

The following forecast is provided by James Bodine, in conjunction with the instructor, as part of lab work for the Introduction to Meteorology course:

Monday

High clouds early followed by an increase in cloudiness during the afternoon. Overall, partly sunny. Slight chance of a shower late this afternoon. Probability of precipitation 20%.

High temperature in the mid to upper 50s.

Light winds becoming southwesterly at 8-12 miles per hour this afternoon.

Monday Night

Cloudy. A band of rainshowers will likely accompany a cold front moving through between 10pm and 2 am. There is the slight chance of an embedded thundershower. Probability of precipitation 70%.

Temperatures dropping into the low 40s by morning.

Winds shifting from southwest to northwest and increasing to 10-15 miles per hour toward morning.

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy to partly sunny and breezy. Probability of precipitation 10%.

High temperatures in the upper 40s.

Northwest winds at 15-25 miles per hour with gusts to 35 mph. Stronger gusts are possible over the higher terrain.

Tuesday Night

Cloudy with a chance of light rain after midnight. Probability of precipitation 50%.

Low temperature near 40.

Winds becoming light and variable, becoming southeast by morning.

Wednesday

Cloudy and cool with light rain likely. Probability of precipitation 80%.

Extended forecast

It is starting to look like a possible snowstorm for Thursday and Thursday night, at least over the higher terrain. However, it is still early to say with any certainty, particularly in regard to the precipitation type this early in the year. The track of the storm holds the key. Updates to come……

Wednesday Night

Overcast with occasional showers overnight. Probability of precipitation 90%.  Rainfall totals between 0.10 and 0.25 inches likely.

Temperatures holding steady in the low 50s.

Breezy, with winds out of the east-northeast, shifting to southeast by morning, at 10-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Some stronger gusts over the high terrain are possible.

Thursday

Cloudy in the morning with a chance of a shower. Probability of precipitation 30%. Some improvement in the afternoon. It will remain mostly cloudy but there may be a few peeks of sun.
