It is interesting to see how things evolve and how with time they become an intrinsic part of our culture. Eight years ago a small event geared to celebrate the cultural and social contributions of immigrants became the first Immigrants’ Day in the Berkshires. In a short period of time a relatively small event held at the First Baptist Church has grown to host from 500 to 600 guests. As the Immigrant’s Day has grown so has BCC’s participation in this event. With the leadership of President Raverta and Dean Bullock the College has found a multitude of ways to support the event that range from small contributions, like lending our flags, to crucial ones. BCC has stepped up as sponsor for the event and has been the channel through which many students find a way to volunteer their skills and talents. Students from Service Learning, SGA, MSSO along with students from different fields of study have become key players. Some students volunteer behind the scenes setting up and tearing down the event, others on the main stage sharing their cultural/artistic skills, others providing fun educational entertainment for children and others cooking and serving delicious dishes. From the MSSO perspective I can say that my first Immigrant’s Day as a BCC staff I was joined by three students, this time there were twenty… yes! 20 of you!!!! Your service and your dancing were well noticed. Today’s BCC students are a pretty close representation of the community at large. This Immigrant’s Day our rich diversity could be seen by your physical presence thorugh the event and through our latest MSSO video which provides a glimpse of our BCC students. Thank you from all the passion you bring to our community and the service you provide.
