Incorporating a variety of formal and informal writing assignments in your course can promote student engagement, critical thinking about subject matter, and be relatively easy to grade. This interactive seminar will explore themes related to writing assignments such as:

• What are the traits of a good writing assignment?
• How can an assignment help students make ethical choices (e.g., not to plagiarize)?
• What are the differing outcomes of highly directive versus open-ended assignments?
• How can we support students in developing information literacy through writing?

About the Seminar Leader
Susanmarie Harrington is Professor of English and Director of Writing in the Disciplines (WID) at the University of Vermont in Burlington. She holds degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B., 1984) and the University of Michigan (Ph.D., 1990). Prior to her current position, she was Director of Writing and Chair of the English Department at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. The WID Program collaborates with faculty across campus to explore ways that writing supports student learning and offers evidence of student achievements.
