PARCC – What is it, and how does it affect us?

parcc ela modelIt’s hard to keep straight all the initiatives on the federal, state, and regional levels that are aimed that college completion, student success, retention, career options, and so on. One initiative that is gathering momentum, particularly in Massachusetts, is PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). One major project for PARCC is the creation of a common core state standard in Math and English and Language Arts (ELA), which will have an accompanying assessment that replaces the MCAS system. The hype is that this new system will ensure college readiness and eliminate the need for developmental courses for any high school student who has passed the exam (I use exam here, but the hope it that is will also include authentic assessment components). At this point, it is probably a good idea to become familiar with PARCC. There will be a statewide meeting later this month, with representatives from BCC admin and faculty in attendance. You can find out about the Mass PARCC projects at this website, and stay tuned for more information this fall:

  1. Dori:

Thank you for posting this information. I think that among all the various initiatives we are undertaking involving the state (e.g., Vision project; Readiness Centers), PARCC is the initiative that needs faculty involvement as much as any and may be the easiest to neglect if one isn’t careful.

PARCC directly affects BCC’s placement policies in that after a period of extensive study and, hopefully, collaboration with college faculty, the placement tests are slated occur in the high schools (by 2015) and will determine at what level the stduent starts their courses here.
