This is a well-written and balanced article which refers to several research studies and current books on this topic. The conclusion? There are signs that the current generation (born 1982-2002) do show signs of decreased empathy (based on a number of possible causes – media violence, Internet distancing, excess self-esteem leading to narcissism, etc.), but at the same time, there is an upswing in volunteerism, service, and focus on compassion. Don’t count out Gen Y too quickly!
