Derrick Z. Jackson is one of the treasures of the Boston Globe. In this piece, he brings to light several important points:
- Mass’s touted high 4th grade reading scores are mostly due to the higher than national scores of Whites and Asians
- Wealthy eastern MA communities are increasingly turning to parents for private support, but this is not a possibility for poorer communities
- We are in danger of re-segregating education along ethnic/income lines
- There is a need to a call for action for what is looking like a civil rights issue
Needless to say, the community colleges are the inheritors of these issues.
