Duties:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, skating rinks, trails and parkways.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Visitor Services Supervisor for the MassParks West Region – Mount Greylock.

The core responsibility of this position is to provide programming, historical interpretation and environmental education for the visiting public.

Duties:

Investigates, plans and implements interpretive, recreational and environmental education programs and pubic information services for groups, organizations and the general public.

Coordinates with the Visitor Services & Programs Unit and Interpretive Services in the development of all programs, print materials, educational/interpretive/visitor services offerings to ensure best practices and compliance with Agency standard and protocols

Attends all Visitor Services & Programs Unit and Interpretive Services meetings and trainings for professional development and collaboration

Collaborates with other DCR programs and bureaus in the development of educational and interpretive resources (such as Planning & Engineering, Office of Cultural Resources, Bureau of Forestry, etc)

Performs public information duties, interacts and networks with private and public entities to provide comprehensive programming and access for residents.

Completes all Visitor Services & Programs Unit and Interpretive Services administration responsibilities and tasks required including but not limited to completing vendor contracts, updating forms, service contracts, purchase order forms and payment vouchers.

Researches and prepares interpretive educational program material such as curriculum guides, pamphlets and maps for public distribution; design and fabrication of displays, media productions, exhibits and graphics.

Coordinates operation of Visitor Information Center and exhibits.

Staffs the front desk, greeting visitors and assisting them with their information needs.

Performs routine maintenance on exhibits, trails and public areas; inspects visitor center, surrounding grounds and reservations to ensure a safe and attractive environment.

Initiates and coordinates volunteer opportunities to support the park beyond regular operations.

Investigates and secures alternative financial resources to support programming beyond DCR spending plans.

Supervises interpretive staff of lower grade level and volunteers.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience, administering, supervising or conducting interpretive, educational or recreational programs in a public, non-profit or private agency, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in park and/or recreation management, natural sciences, environmental education, history, park interpretation or museum management may be substituted for the required (A) experience.
